Dozer

"Horses and hands, Jimbo! If you can draw them, you can draw anything!"
I heard those words from my dad many, many times. This is the first time, though, that I've had the need to draw a horse with such detail--and in color.
Earlier this month my family had the good fortune to spend an afternoon at the stables of the Seattle Mounted Patrol. This was a surprise early birthday present for my daughter who, like most little girls, is totally in love with horses. Officer Jim took extra special care of my little kiddo --taking time out every chance he got to take her over and show her different things. He finished by allowing her to walk his horse, Dozer, into his stall. They were all wonderful but this gentleman really made her day. So, when my contact over at the SMP wrote to ask if I would draw a portrait of Dozer for a surprise gift for Officer Jim-it was an easy an enthusiastic yes from me.
I love using color pencils and don't get to do it often--mostly tending to paint these days. I hope you like Dozer -- I hope Officer Jim and the rest of the Seattle Mounted Patrol do, too. :)

New Life Drawings-Chelsea

One of the great models from our sessions at Artist's Edge was at the Clear Creek session in Silverdale yesterday. Chelsea will be back in late August so hopefully my school meetings won't keep me from getting there again. Our Poulsbo sessions will start up again in September.

The Nine--almost finished!

Getting Ready for The Festival of The Arts (which was awesome, by the way! :) ) made getting in the studio a little rough this month but, after a productive weekend, here is the nearly complete painting which I am calling, The Nine. There is a little more work to do on a few of the boats and I will be sure to post the fully finished piece as soon as it's ready--I just couldn't wait to show it off a little early! :)
I would love to hear your thoughts and comments on the piece. I appreciate the follows and shares!

New Painting

Here's a new piece I'm working on. It's still in the early stages but I'm very happy with it so far. Making the time for the studio is so important but so easy to let slide--don't let it. Schedule your priorities rather than prioritize your schedule.

Recent Work From Life Drawing Sessions

It has been truly wonderful to get back to a regular habit of life drawing. Until recently, most of the local groups met at times or in locations that just weren't convenient for me. Luckily, my good pal, Derek Gundy, over at Artist's Edge in Poulsbo started a group that meets on Thursday evenings and I've been going fairly regularly and even facilitating many of the sessions. I can definitely feel the positive impact that this regular practice is having on all of my work.

Artist's Edge has tons of other great classes and workshops as well so make sure to check out their site and find the one that works for you! They are at: http://www.artistsedge.com/classes.html

Here are some recent samples of my work from the Thursday Life Drawing Sessions. We are really lucky to have such great models every week!
